Mental health problems. Is the answer in natural supplements?

Good nutrition only comes from food? I’m afraid I disagree. Especially when it comes to mental health. 

 

Years ago when I first decided to pursue a career in nutrition I held the belief “food first”; with a wholesome and organic diet, supplements are not needed. But the more I practice nutritional therapy with a functional medicine approach, the more conflicted I've become with this belief.

 

Somehow supplements have gained a really bad reputation in the health industry. Apparently taking them is poor measure to how dedicated we are to eating well. I have to say, what a load of rubbish! Of course everything starts with eating a wholesome diet. After all there’s not much a multivitamin can do for you if you’re eating fast food for dinner every night and washing it down with a can of fizzy pop. But the more clients I see with complex health problems, the more I’m convinced that wholesome and organic food is not enough.

 

A case for good quality supplements. 

Good quality supplements have their place. I’ve noticed this particularly with clients suffering from mental imbalances living in London. Even with a perfect diet, the combination of our depleted soils, the storage and transportation of our food, genetic alterations of traditional heirloom species, and the increased stress and nutritional demands resulting from a toxic environment and stressful lifestyle, make it impossible for us to get the vitamins and minerals we need solely from the foods we eat.

 

Over years of studying and practicing nutritional therapy with a functional medicine approach, I've refined the basic supplements needed to support our modern diets for better mental wellbeing. 

 

1. Probiotics. 

2. Methylated B vitamins. 

3. Omega 3 EPA & DHA. 

4. Magnesium. 

5. Vitamin D. 

 

I don't encourage that you all go out and buy these without discussing this with your GP first and seeing the guidance of a registered natural healthcare practitioner. Especially if you are on medication. It's important to establish the right dosage and the purest, safest and most effective brands available.
